A pharmacist assessing a patient's symptoms during a consultation

About this service

Pharmacy First lets you see a pharmacist about seven common conditions without needing a GP appointment first. Your pharmacist will assess your symptoms in our private consultation room and advise on the best next step.

Where it is clinically appropriate, the pharmacist can supply treatment — including some prescription-only medicines — directly. If your symptoms need further care, we will explain what to do and signpost you to the right service.

Conditions we can help with

  • Sinusitis (age 12 and over)
  • Sore throat (age 5 and over)
  • Earache (ages 1 to 17)
  • Infected insect bites (age 1 and over)
  • Impetigo (age 1 and over)
  • Shingles (age 18 and over)
  • Uncomplicated urinary tract infections (women aged 16 to 64)

Eligibility: Age ranges vary by condition. The pharmacist confirms whether the service is right for you. Final eligibility and treatment decisions are confirmed by the pharmacist during your consultation.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an appointment for Pharmacy First?
Many people are seen as a walk-in, but sending a booking request first helps us plan your visit and reduce waiting. If it is urgent, please call us.
Will I definitely be given medicine?
Not always. The pharmacist assesses your symptoms and supplies treatment only where it is clinically appropriate and safe. You may be given self-care advice or referred elsewhere instead.
Is there a charge?
Pharmacy First is an NHS service and is free if you are eligible. Normal NHS prescription charges may apply to any medicine supplied unless you are exempt.
